Learning from Alistair

Jan 3, 2026

How my partner’s dog changed the way we look at "Premium" food.

Before Pawsh & Pasture was a brand, it was a lesson learned in our own kitchen. It started with Alistair, my partner’s Weimaraner. Alistair was the original heart of our home, but he was also our first hard lesson in canine nutrition.

Despite being fed what was marketed as "top-tier" premium kibble, Alistair battled ongoing gastrointestinal issues. It was a constant source of stress for us and discomfort for him. We trusted the labels, but the results just weren't there.

As Alistair aged, the stakes got higher. He was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure, a condition that required strict management of his salt intake. Suddenly, relying on commercial processed food wasn't just risky—it was impossible. We couldn't trust the hidden sodium or the undefined "natural flavors."

So, we took matters into our own hands. We switched Alistair to a homemade, limited-ingredient diet where we controlled every single component. The change was profound. Not only did we manage his heart condition and extend his life beyond the prognosis, but those nagging GI issues completely vanished.

Alistair proved to us that food is medicine. He taught us that stripping back the fillers and focusing on pure, simple ingredients could fundamentally change a dog's quality of life.

Next week: The pack grows. I’ll share the story of Chelsea, the dog who found me, and how our food philosophy supported her through her own battles.
